An air conditioner removes hot air from inside the house, cools it, then distributes it back indoors, free of pollutants and heat. How Lethbridge Air Conditioning Works

A central AC unit is made up of several components that filter, cool, and circulate air in and out of the house. The components of an air conditioning system include:

  • Thermostat
  • Condenser coil
  • Compressor

  • Evaporator coil
  • Refrigerant
  • Filter
  • Blower

These parts can either be housed in a single unit or two different units. A split-system air conditioner comprises an outdoor and an indoor unit. The outdoor unit contains the fan, condenser, and compressor. The evaporator coil, filter, and blower are fitted into the indoor system. In a packaged system, all the components are assembled into one unit.

The Process of Air Cooling With an AC

A thermostat controls the entire system by switching it on and shutting it off when the house reaches the programmed temperature. When you set your thermostat to the desired temperature, it turns on the condenser fan and the compressor. The compressor pumps the refrigerant, a fluid with a low boiling point, and readily absorbs heat from the surroundings.

When the compressor starts working, the refrigerant goes into it as a low-pressure vapor in low temperature and leaves as a high-pressure vapor at a higher temperature. The refrigerant passes through the condenser coil, where it condenses into a liquid. The condenser fans then blow over the coil, cooling the refrigerant and helping to release hot air from indoors to the outside.

The Cooling Process in the Evaporator

From the condenser coil, the refrigerant flows to the evaporator through a metering device. The metering device lowers the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant. As the refrigerant fills the evaporator coil, the blower starts circulating indoor air. Hot air is pulled from the room into the air conditioning system through the return duct.

Next, it goes through the filter, which removes particles, dust, and other pollutants present. The air blows over the evaporator, where the refrigerant inside the coils absorbs heat and humidity. It then goes through the supply duct and back into the house, cooler and cleaner than it was when it was pulled into the return duct.

As the refrigerant absorbs heat from the circulating air, it boils and turns to vapor again. Finally, it goes back to the condenser, where the heat dispersion process recurs with the help of the fan.
